UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women

The United Nations Trust Fund in Support of Actions to Eliminate Violence against Women (UN Trust Fund) is the only multilateral grant-making mechanism that supports local, national and regional efforts of government and non-governmental organizations to end gender-based violence.

UN Trust Fund projects focus on supporting the implementation of national laws, policies and action plans that address violence against women through grants to raise awareness; advocate for adequate budgetary allocation; build multi-sector partnerships; develop sustainable capacities of judiciaries, law enforcement and health service providers; promote access of survivors to services; and create and strengthen data collection systems.

Please Contribute to the Trust Fund

Contributions come from a diverse group of governments, non-governmental organizations, the private sector and individuals. In 2008, donors include: the governments of Australia, Austria, Brazil, Finland, Ireland, Liechtenstein, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Trinidad and Tobago, Spain, and the United States of America; the UN Foundation; National Committees for UNIFEM in Austria, Iceland, Italy, and the United States of America; Avon Products Inc., Johnson & Johnson, TAG Heuer, Cinema for Peace, Zonta International, as well as UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador Nicole Kidman.

In 2008, the UN Trust Fund has awarded US$19 million to 23 projects and initiatives in 29 countries. This is more than the UN Trust Fund has awarded in total since its inception in 1996. The increase in annual contributions, however, still lags behind the vast needs and demands at the country level. This year, only four percent of the $525 million requested has been met.

In order to bolster its response capacity for pressing country-level needs, the UN Trust Fund continues to intensify its outreach and resource mobilization with the aim of achieving its target of $100 million annually by 2015, the deadline for meeting the challenges posed by both the MDGs and the Secretary-General’s UNite to End Violence against Women Campaign.
